Jr. Year Science Research

This Junior Year Research Project is a collaborative effort developed by members of the Science and Library Departments of Gill St. Bernard’s School. The Project is designed to allow students an opportunity to independently research a specific aspect of the science course to which they are assigned in their junior year.
There are several objectives involved in the Project: the refinement of critical analysis skills; the fostering of a coherent approach to the research method, particularly as relates to the burgeoning number of scientific publications and databases available today; and the development of a rational mechanism that may be applied to the objective appraisal of differing points of view or conflicting data.
A final research paper in the form of a scientific literature review of from eight to twenty pages is expected from the students at the conclusion of the program, offered in evidence of the extent to which these objectives have been met. The ultimate goal of the Project—indeed the hope underlying this collaborative venture—is that a genuine interest in the area of study chosen by the student is developed, leading ultimately to further, future investigation.

In 2004, The Dr. James Wong Junior Research Project Awards system was established to recognize superlative student work on the Project. The following pages present the 2005 award winners, as well as the Paul Nardoni Foundation for Cancer Research Prize paper. Honors were recognized in the following categories:

Physical Science:
String Theory Variants and Their Impact on M Theory” Douglas Helferich
The Development of Quantum Computing Technology” Jessica Ramey

Biological Science:
Auxins—Versatile and Vital Plant Hormones” Elizabeth Ng

Behavioral Science:
Etiology of Phobic Reaction Formation” Marla Maccia
“Sexual Involvement and Behavior in the Relationships of Adolescents” Courtney Puglisi

Paul Nardoni Foundation:
Finding the Cure for Breast Cancer One Gene at a Time” Laurie Drews
