Courier News Staff Report
Senior catcher Tyler Merck and senior first baseman Andrew Gunst homered during an eight-run second inning that powered the Gill St. Bernard's School baseball team to a 13-3 upset of Bridgewater-Raritan in the second round of the Somerset County Tournament on Saturday in Bridgewater.
The 13th-seeded Knights led 2-1 after the first inning before unloading against Bridgewater-Raritan starter Scott Horowitz. Murck smashed a three-run home run, Gunst belted a two-run shot and senior shortstop Kyle O'Neill connected for a two-run double as Gill St. Bernard's (9-5) quickly put the game out of reach.
Junior left-hander John Strony (2-2) pitched all six innings for the Knights, allowing five hits and striking out six. Murck finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
Gill St. Bernard's will face fourth-seeded Somerville next Saturday at White Oak Park in Branchburg in the Knights' first trip to the SCT quarterfinals.
